Some founders genuinely want to be influencers, big audiences, personal brand as the product, and honestly, good for them, it’s a real path.
This article is for the other kind. The founder who wants the business results of visibility and feels slightly ill at the word content creator.
You can have the first thing without becoming the second. I’d go further: in B2B, the reluctant version usually wins.
The 2 games are actually different
Influencing is a reach game. It rewards volume, trends, personality, and being everywhere. The audience is the product, so the bigger the better.
Authority is a trust game. It rewards depth, consistency, and being unmistakably good at 1 thing. The audience isn’t the product, your expertise is, and the only people who matter are the couple thousand who could realistically hire you.
Mixing up the games is where the discomfort comes from. Founders picture the influencer playbook, daily posting, hot takes, life on camera, and opt out of the whole platform. But that was never the assignment.
What the authority version asks of you
Three posts a week about your actual field. No trends, no dancing, no breakfast photos unless your business is breakfast.
One of my clients is a fire protection software co-founder, nearly 20 years in the industry, sits on national code committees. His content is fire codes, compliance workflows, industry mistakes he’s watched for 2 decades. Not once has he posted a gym selfie. His LinkedIn sourced an $80K deal anyway, or more accurately, because of that.
The buyers reading him didn’t want a personality. They wanted proof of competence, delivered steadily, and a profile that answered the 40 second check before they ever emailed.
The skeptics keep being my best clients
Which is funny, because they push back hardest at the start. But the founders who dislike social media treat it like a business decision instead of a hobby. They want scope, cadence, a timeline, and then they let the system run. No 11pm messages about a competitor going viral.
That patience is exactly what this rewards. Show up 3 times a week for months while everyone else sprints and quits, and the space is yours. Time cost is about 5 hours a month with a system, most of it 1 recorded conversation.
You’re allowed to dislike social media. The authority version doesn’t need you to like it, it needs you to show up.
